Rescues currently available for adoption
To adopt from HITHGER, we request 3 references, a write up from the possible adopter about their facility, the intended care, information about their veterinarian, plus photos of the facility where the animal(s) will reside.
A 50 dollar processing fee is charged and non-refundable. We don't charge the adopter anything until the newly adopted animal is picked up. Other adoption fees are added to animals depending on their assessed value. Many of our rescues are worked with and trained, before being placed. No animal will be "held" for adoption.
If several people are interested in the same animal, we will decide which placement is in the best interest of that animal. (The nicest facility is not necessarily the best placement).
HITHGER is not responsible for transportation of any newly adopted animal to their new location.
Hobbs is approximately 12 years old, and stands 9.3 hands. He had recently been returned to our rescue after being alone for awhile. Hobbs is a sensitive fellow and needs buddies, be it goats, a horse, or another donkey. Currently, Hobbs is undergoing rehabilitation to help change his attitude, so currently, he is not available, but will soon be. If interested in Hobbs, don't hesitate to contact us.
Penny is a 15 year old, titled BLM mustang mare. Several years ago, after an extremely bad cart wreck, Penny would up with double tendon reattachment surgery. The wreck caused her deep flexor and extensor tendons to be mangled in half, on her back, left hock. Penny, back then, was known as the first ever horse to survive such a surgery at U.C. Davis Large Animal Hospital. Penny was trained to saddle AFTER the surgery, but then we decided to let her just be a pasture ornament. Unfortunately, we have to cut back on our own, personal equine expenses. With that, if the right adopter comes along, I would love to place Penny as a companion animal. $50 processing fee only.

Lil Red is a 2 year old mini mule. He stands 36 inches tall. Red has had beginning target training, has been taught to ground driving, plus pack (an exceptionally light load). He crosses foot bridges, and will go through ditches. Red readily jumps into a trailer. Lil Red is a total sweetheart, a bit of a pistol, that will do well with a mule savvy owner.
ADOPTED January 14, 2012 - Kate is a titled, BLM jenny, in her mid teens. She stands about 11 hands, is friendly, enjoys stratches, massages and ear rubs, and enjoys having her head cradled. Kate is very good with her feet, able to be haltered and leads, though sometimes she doesn't want to move. She loads fairly easily into a trailer. She was on a diet and is looking exceptionally good. Kate is UTD with 4 way and WNV, and rabies.
Adoption fee plus processing fee for Kate: $200.
Pauliann is an 8 year old jenny that was an extreme neglect case. She is UTD with 4 way and WNV vaccines. Pauliann is currently still on a diet to lose more, but is way down in weight from when she first came in. While at her foster care home in the Willows area, she has become friendly, and would do well around children. She is getting much better with leading. Pauliann has a very mellow personality, and looks for attention, loves ear rubs, and likes hugs and kisses too! Pauliann has become much better about having hoof trims, but she still must have a farrier that will deal with her sometimes ill behavior. She still needs a special placement at this time. Adoption plus processing fee to adopt Pauliann is $125.
Jewel is a 12.2 hand, domestic spotted donkey, approximately 12 years old. She is somewhat headshy, which may be from a vision problem, but once haltered, she leads well. In her past, Jewel has been in a full pack string, participated in show demonstrations, and has been on trails. Jewel is very good with her feet, and is UTD with WNV and 4 way. She is currently on a diet and has lost some weight. Jewel needs a home that will continue to keep her on a diet, and give her lots of attention.
Update 9.28.11: Jewel's body weight is down, but she's still in the process of loosing fat pads, which will take time. She is less shy than before.
Adoption fee, plus processing fee: $125
Kellico -
Info by Mary - I have done almost all of Kelly's handling/training, and known her all her life. She belonged to my friend and landlady. I haven't had time to play with her for years and she has sat and done nothing since she's been 2ish, except for an occasional day when I 'd take her out and pony her on a ride and this summer when I took her out and played with her a little.
This summer/fall (2011) I've gotten on her back and walked her around the yard a few times and ponied her on 3 trail rides. She participated in a costume class in October (2011). I was a bandit and she was my pack horse with pannier bags stuffed full of loot.
Kelly is pretty self-confident and left-brained most of the time. I have found that she will do about anything for me, but she'll test new people to see what they know and if she can move their feet. She learns fast and I've had to work hard to raise her level of excitement. She did get excited at the costume class, a new place, new horses she wanted to meet , not being out or handled (except vaccines and farrier) for 8-9 years, and when we walked thru the gate into the arena, her pannier bags bumped off her into my mount which made him react, and then she reacted BIG. The next time I walked her thru she just hurried a little and then next time she was bored and walked thru like nothing ever happened. This is very typical of her.
She gets along well with other horses, altho she hasn't gotten to meet many out of her immediate group and lives in our herd of 9 where she is #2-3 and once in a while tries to be #1-2, but is good friends with everyone. he loves to eat with someone else. Her favorite buddies are my mini and donkey, perhaps because they are the youngest and like to run and play more.
I'm not sure if you just are looking for a companion horse or want something you can train and ride. I'm sure she would be fine for either, but she does love to DO stuff and I think she would be a great riding horse.
She has great hooves and has never needed shoes or had any problems.
Processing fee, plus adoption fee: $250
